“When you are courting a nice girl an hour seems like a second. When you sit on a red-hot cinder a second seems like an hour. That’s relativity.”- Albert Einstein
What I’m going to tell you is what I deemed a disaster. But if you beg to differ, well, I supposed it’s relative.
It’s only 45 minutes. It’s only 28 of those 13-year-old in one room. And it’s only my 12th hour here in Buyeo. It’s only my first lesson. And I had no clue… that I would be teaching this soon.
Nothing prepared. Nothing as expected. Nothing to draw the attention of 28 of those 13-year-olds in one room. And nothing for them to realise that I’m one of those Asian- Australian who knows basic Korean. And I had no clue… that they hate English.
Besides greeting, I met a thick wall of silence. Besides greeting, I met sleeping students. Besides greeting in English, I spoke Korean, though really broken. And I had no clue… that this was heading to a disaster of an English lesson.
Way over their head was a strange accent from another land. Way over their head was an English teacher miming and speaking broken Korean. Way over my head was their level of disinterest in a second language. And I had no clue… that in desperation, I’ve given away information personal enough for one to steal my identity. (If Rumpelstiltskin was around, yeah, rather not go there)
After class, there were sighs of relief. After class, some stayed back. After class, those stayed back tried to pronounce my English name. And I had no clue… that maybe some were listening in my horrible first lesson.
Maybe it wasn’t such a disaster. Maybe it was not bad. Maybe.
Oh well, it’s all relative.
That was three weeks ago. That was the showcase of my worst teaching day ever. That was a beginning of a good year.
Given enough time, you’ll find those 28 13-year-olds have some wicked sense of humour. Given enough time, you’ll find those 13-year-old are discovering who they are. Given enough time, you’ll find that you could learn something from them. Yeap, even the sleeping ones.
Here are some classroom sneak peak, at summer camp.
